Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum plagiophyllum C.Agardh.

Type locality: Batu Ferringhi Beach, Penang Island; (Phang & Yoshida 1997: 63) Holotype: Liung Cheing Poh; 10 June 1994; Growing on the surface of lower intertidal rocks; at the exposed shore; SAP; 062135 (Phang & Yoshida 1997: 63) Notes: Type locality: Batu Ferringhi on Pinang Island (Ajisaka 2002: 82). Phang & Yoshida 1997: 63 note: Holotype: Male (PSM 1329) ; Other specimens from Penang Island examined: July 11, 1995, females PSM 1661; July 11, 1995, females PSM 1653, 1655, 1659, 1661, 1664, 1667 and 1670 and males PSM 1652, 1556 and 1675: October 25, 1995, males PSM 1689, 1692, 1697, 2064, 2067, 2072, 2077, 2085 and 2091; March 20, 1996, males PSM 2068. 2103 and 2111: July 11, 1995, nonfertile plants PSM 1642, 1646, 1648, 1668, 1677, 1970 and 1975.
