The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus decumbens (T.Segi) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs
Origin of species name
Participle B (Latin), with prostrate stems, the tips rising upwards (Stearn 1973).

Type locality: Japan: Mihonoseki, Izumo Prov., on Chondria (Silva 1996-to date). Type: SAP 025880 (Yoshida 1998: 1065). Notes: Holotype: SAPP 25880; Mihonoseki, Shimane Prefecture, Japan; vi.1948 (Díaz-Tapia et al., 2017: table 4).
