The type species (lectotype) of the genus Synedra is Synedra balthica Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Fragilariforma lata (A.Cleve) D.M.Williams & Round.

Type Information
Type locality: Örsträsk par., Örsträsk 8:4E, 1923, lectotype designated by Renberg (1977); (Williams & Round 1987: 282) Notes: Flower (2005: 62) notes that Kilroy et al. (2003) located a specimen of F. lata in the original material of Cleve-Euler (on slide S122588) making the species lectotype selected by Renberg (1977) unnecessary.

Adjective (Latin), parasitic (Stearn 1973).
