The type species (holotype) of the genus Thalassiosira is Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii Cleve.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Shionodiscus variantus (Shiono) A.J.Alverson, S.-H.Kang & E.C.Theriot.
