The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Neopyropia fucicola (V.Krishnamurthy) L.-E.Yang & J.Brodie
Type information
Holotype locality: Mukkah [Makah] Bay, Clallam County, Washington, USA (Sutherland et al. 2011: 1143). Holotype: V. Krishnamurthy; 13 May 1968; WTU 255128 (Sutherland et al. 2011: 1143). Notes: Krishnamurthy 11-00121; on Fucus.
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), dwelling, growing on Fucus (Stearn 1973).
