Nomenclatural notes
Silva in Silva, Basson & Moe (1996: 919-920) gave a comprehensive account of the tortuose nomenclatural history of this entity. The combination, although frequently attributed to Griffiths & Harvey in Harvey (1848: pl. CCVI), was made a year earlier by Zanardini (1847: 223). It is, in any case, a later homonym of Ceramium gracillimum C. Agardh (1824: 140; type locality Atlantic France).

Taxonomic notes
C. gracillimum (Kützing) Zanardini (reported by several authors as “Griff. & Harv.” or “Griff. & Harv. in Harv.”), is a later homonym of C. gracillimum C. Agardh (probably Compsothamnion thuyoides, see Silva, Basson & Moe, 1996: 920). While the basionym Hormoceras gracillimum Kützing (1842: 733) should be referred to C. diaphanum (Womersley 1978: 236), C. gracillimum sensu Griffiths & Harvey in Harvey corresponds to C. flaccidum (Womersley 1978: 234) (Furnari et al., 1999).
