Nomenclatural note
Silva in Silva, Basson & Moe (1996: 919-920) gave a comprehensive account of the tortuose nomenclatural history of this entity. The combination, although frequently attributed to Griffiths & Harvey in Harvey (1848: pl. CCVI), was made a year earlier by Zanardini (1847: 223). It is, in any case, a later homonym of Ceramium gracillimum C. Agardh (1824: 140; type locality Atlantic France). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Taxonomic notes
C. gracillimum (Kützing) Zanardini (reported by several authors as "Griff. & Harv." or "Griff. & Harv. in Harv."), is a later homonym of C. gracillimum C. Agardh (probably Compsothamnion thuyoides, see Silva, Basson & Moe, 1996: 920). While the basionym Hormoceras gracillimum Kützing (1842: 733) should be referred to C. diaphanum (Womersley 1978: 236), C. gracillimum sensu Griffiths & Harvey in Harvey corresponds to C. flaccidum (Womersley 1978: 234; Furnari et al., 1999). "This new combination, based on Hormoceras gracillimum Kutzing (see the corresponding entry in this note), was proposed by Zanardini (1847: 223) who reported this species from Venice (Italy); the name is illegitimate because it is a later homonym of C. gracillimum C. Agardh, [see C. Agardh, 1824: 140; probably synonym of Compsothamnion thuioides according to Silva et al. (1996: 920)]." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 195). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
"C. gracillimum (Kützing) Griffiths et Harvey ex Harvey nom. illeg.. This new combination was proposed by Harvey (1848: pl. 206) who reported this species also from the Mediterranean Sea. The resulting name is illegitimate because it is a later homonym of C. gracillimum C. Agardh (see Agardh, 1824: 140) which, according to Silva et al. (1996: 920) probably corresponds to Compsothamnion thuioides (J.E. Smith) Schmitz. We follow Womersley (1978: 236; 1998: 410) in referring C. gracillimum sensu Harvey to C. flaccidum (= Gayliella flaccida). It should be noted that Womersley (op. cit.) instead refers the basionym of that species (Hormoceras gracillimum Kützing) to Ceramium diaphanum (see the note to C. diaphanum at the corresponding entry)." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 245). - (15 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
