The type species (lectotype) of the genus Closterium is Closterium lunula Ehrenberg & Hemprich ex Ralfs.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Closterium dianae var. arcuatum (Brebisson ex Ralfs) Rabenhorst

Origin of species name
Participle A (Latin), acuminate, i.e. tapering gradually or abruptly from inwardly curved sides into a narrow point (Stearn 1973).
