The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cosmarium is Cosmarium undulatum Corda ex Ralfs.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cosmarium callosissimum A.M.Scott & Grönblad.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), almost circular, with length breadth ration of about 6 to 5 (Stearn 1973).
