Type locality: Germany: Nordhausen (Index Nominum Algarum). Notes: Following data given by Necchi & Zucchi (1995: 211): Scotland, Aberdeen, vii.1844, Kützing collection 960, L 940265 and they note that a lectotype was designated by Necci et al., 1993.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), violet, refers to the blue-red colours nearer blue (Stearn 1973).
