Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lepidodinium chlorophorum (Elbrächter & Schnepf) Gert Hansen, Botes & Salas.

Type locality: off List/Sylt (55º01.30'N; 08º27.10'E), German Bight, North Sea; (Elbrächter & Schnepf 1996: 382) Holotype: figs 1-39: marine plankton; (Elbrächter & Schnepf 1996: 382)
