The type species (holotype) of the genus Synechococcus is Synechococcus elongatus (Nägeli) Nägeli.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Parasynechococcus marenigrum F.Coutinho, Tschoeke, F.Thompson & C.Thompson.
