Type locality not specifically designated; the alga was reported by Karsten (1891: 20) to occur in the Botanical Garden of Buitenzorg (Bogor, Indonesia).; Notes: Type specimen not designated; the Figure 9 of Plate III in Karsten (1891) is suggested as possible lectotype (Rindi, pers. comm.).

Adjective (Latin), growing by the sea (Stearn 1973).
