The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hormidium is Hormidium velutinum Kützing.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Deuterostichococcus marinus (Deason) Pröschold & Darienko.

Type locality: "Planta ex exemplo soli 257 m a litore post thinia (colles arenosos) in sanctuario pro avibus in loco Dauphin Island Alabama dicto, m. Mai 1964 lecta"; (Deason 1969: 240, 244) Neotype: MU; 31022 (Silva, Mattox & Blackwell 1972: 643) Notes: Single gathering from Dauphin Island Alabama constitutes a holotype; however, Silva & al (1972: 643) indicated that no type material was extant; a neotype was designated by them, selected from a culture sent by T.R. Deason. Isoneotype at F.

Adjective (Latin), growing in the sea (Stearn 1973).
