The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Nomenclatural notes
According to Calado (2011: 647), Loeblich (1965) indicated Pouchet (1887) as the place of original description of this species, in which it appeared with the spelling 'musaei'; the first illustration of the species appeared as fig. 6 on pl. X in Pouchet (1887). He adds, however, that the name was validly published by Danysz (1886), and there is no reason, either concerning priority or linguistics, to change the spelling musei. - (13 Dec 2011) - Wendy Guiry
