The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Jadwigia neglecta (A.J.Schilling) Moestrup.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), pertaining to winter, also "hyemale" (Stearn 1973).
