Type locality: "Dortfteich in der Umgebung von Hirschberg, Bohmen" (modern Doksy, Czech Republic); (Index Nominum Algarum) Lectotype: fig. Da in Mainx, d, c: Fig. 1p (epitype) (Kosmala et al. 2009: 474) Notes: Lectotype designated in Kosmala et al. (2009: 474). Epitype: permanently preserved material from strain SAG 1224-14, deposited at the herbarium of the Biology faculty at Warsaw University.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), stellate, with narrow divisions radiating from the center like the rays of a star (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.
