The type species (lectotype) of the genus Goniolithon is Goniolithon papillosum (Zanardini ex Hauck) Foslie.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Neogoniolithon acropetum (Foslie & M.Howe) W.H.Adey

Type locality: Isle of Culebra, Puerto Rico (Woelkerling 1998: 290). Holotype: M.A. Howe; 3.iii.1906; NY Howe no. 4224 (Woelkerling 1998: 290).
