The type species (lectotype) of the genus Trachelomonas is Trachelomonas volvocina (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Trachelomonas fusiformis f. hexangulata (Prijmaczenko) T.G.Popova.

Type locality: Ukraine, vicinity of Kyiv city, a bog near Darnytsia.; (Prijmachenko 1963: 74)
Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), caudate, i.e., ending with a tail-like appendage (Stearn 1973).
