Type locality: "First isolatedfrom the River Crouch, Essex [England], and apparently common in that district."; (Butcher 1952: 180)

Adjective (Latin), oval, elliptical, i.e., broadest at the middle, the sides curved and length:breadth generally 2:1 (Stearn 1973).
