This is a marine species.
Collected from rock, jetty pilings, tunicates, and as as epiphyte on the seagrass Amphibolis and various algae, including Cystophora, Cladostephus spongiosus and Botryocladia obovata; from just below the lowest water levels in permanent tide pools down to at least 12 m in relatively sheltered localities (Kraft 1978: 539).
Type locality: "Specimina hujus tum ex Nova Hollandia occidental, tum a meridionali pauciora habui" [Encounter Bay, South Australia] (Agardh 1897: 242). Lectotype: Hussey; LD herb. alg. Agardh 33982 (Kraft 1978: 538). Notes: "Nov. Holl. occid. tum merid."
