The type species (holotype) of the genus Catenella is Catenella opuntia (Goodenough & Woodward) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Catenella nipae Zanardini.

Type locality: "Hab. Sarawak, ad basim petiolorum Nypae fruticantis, ex oris fluviorum circe mare." [Sarawak is a Malysian State on the island of Borneo]; (Zanardini 1872: 144) Type: MCVE; (Womersley 1994: 449) Notes: Nypa fruticans (Arecaceae), is commonly known as the Nipa Palm or Mangrove Palm, is a species of palm native to the coastlines and estuarine habitats of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is the only palm adapted to the mangrove biome.
