The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Womersley (1979: 507) notes that P. neglecta Harvey ex J. Agardh (1863: 942) was first designated under this name by Harvey (1855a: 541) but not described. J. Agardh used Harvey's name and based the species on Harvey's Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 177B (type in LD, 39427). - (30 Jan 2009) - Wendy Guiry
