The type species (holotype) of the genus Cymatopleura is Cymatopleura solea (Brébisson) W.Smith.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cymatonitzschia marina (F.W.Lewis) Simonsen.

Syntype localities: "On algae at New London. New Haven and Black Rock Harbors. East river (Mr. Fcbiger), in mud."; (Lewis 1861: 63)
