The type species (lectotype) of the genus Rytiphlaea is Rytiphlaea purpurea C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Protokuetzingia australasica (Montagne) Falkenberg

Type information
Type locality: "in littoribus Van Dieman" (Storm Bay, Tasmania) (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 548). Holotype: Labillardiere; PC, Herb. Montagne (Womersley 2003: 376). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Ducker (1979: 20).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1973).
