Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphidinium carterae Hulburt.

Type locality: Station B67 of N.Z.O.I. Pacific Cruise, Sept. 1958, East of Curtis I., Kermadec group; (Index Nominum Algarum)

Adjective A (Latin), little head.
