Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Klebsormidium nitens (Kützing) Lokhorst.

Basionym
Ulothrix nitens Kützing

Type Information
Type locality: "In ollis cum Palmella cruenta cl. Meneghini v.s." [most likely from flower pots at the Orto botanico di Padova; see Rindi, Ryšánek & Škaloud (2017)]; (Kützing 1849: 349) Lectotype (designated by Lokhorst 1996): Meneghini; L; sheet 939.67-828 (Lokhorst 1996: 14) Notes: According to Lokhorst (1996: 14), the lectotype of Ulothrix nitens is annotatd as "Cum Palmella cruenta in cubita culta". leg. G. Meneghini. (L sheet 939.67.828). Type locality: In plate with another terrestrial alga Palmella cruenta...Italy (Mikhailyuk et al., 2015: 763). Epitype: strain SAG 13.91, designated by Mikhailyuk et al. (2015: 763) to support the lectotype specified above; the authentic strain of K. nitens is permanently preserved in a metabolically inactive state in the SAG. SAG 13-91 was isolated by E.A. Flint from Tekoa soil (New Zealand), original number No 60/74. However, Rindi, Ryšánek & Škaloud (2017: 86) colcluded "...that the epitype of K. nitens [meaning Ulothrix nitens] selected by Mikhailyuk et al. (2015) most probably does not represent the authentic Ulothrix nitens described by Kützing (1849). For this reason, in our opinion Klebsormidium nitens is a suitable candidate taxon for conservation based on a new epitypification. The new epitype would supersede the epitype selected by Mikhailyuk et al. (2015) and should be a strain isolated from Italy, with morphology corresponding to the original protologue. We suggest our sample F1B (=culture CAUP J 306) would be an appropriate candidate as new epitype for this species."

Origin of Species Name
Participle (Latin), shining, gleaming (Dawes & Mathieson 2008).
