The type species (holotype) of the genus Dilophus is Dilophus gunnianus J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota canariensis (Grunow) Tronholm.

Type locality: Tenerife, Canary Islands; (De Clerck 2003: 166) Lectotype: W; 18753 (De Clerck 2003: 166) Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that lectotypification was established by Nizamuddin & Gerloff (1979: 869) who erroneously cited this variety as D. crenulata f. canariensis. Type material collected by Liebetruth (Tronholm et al. 2013).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), crenulate, having small rounded teeth (Stearn 1973).
