Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cocconeis baicalensis (Skvortzov & K.I.Meyer) Skvortzov.
Type Information
Type locality: Baikal Lake; (Skvortsov & Meyer 1928: 11) Lectotype (designated by Yurchak & al. 2023): LE; A0002286 (Yurchak & al. 2023) Notes: "In the collection of the Botanical Institute. V.L. Komarov RAS (LE-A), we discovered Meyer’s collections, on the basis of which Cocconeis placentula var. baicalensis Skvortzov et K. I. Meyer (1928). Based on the original description and original illustrations, we designated part of specimen LE A0002286 as the lectotype of its name.Since features such as the structure of copulas and areoles are difficult to see at the light level, it is necessary to select an epitype from which microphotographs can be taken using a scanning electron microscope. Meyer's material, which describes C. placentula var. baikalensis Skvortzov (1937), was not found, therefore, in its absence, we chose the neotype of the name of this variety from Skabichevsky’s collections, which most closely corresponds to the protologue. Typification in accordance with ICN rules (Turland et al., 2018: Arts. 7.11, 9.22–23) is planned for publication in the near future." (Yurchak & al. 2023).
