The type species (holotype) of the genus Fischerella is Fischerella thermalis Gomont.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Fischerellopsis moniliformis (Frémy) F.E.Fritsch.

Adjective (Latin), moniliform, cylindrical but contracted at regular intervals like a string of beads (Stearn 1973).
