Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Peyssonnelia is Peyssonnelia squamaria (S.G.Gmelin) Decaisne ex J.Agardh.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Thallus crustose, circular, 1-4 cm in diameter and 100-230 mm in thickness in the center (excluding nemathecia) when mature, blood-red, completely adherent to the substratum with appressed margins, with a thin hypobasal calcified layer, with unicellular rhizoids; filaments of the hypothallus comprising a polyflabelate layer, 7-14 mm wide; filaments of the perithallus tightly packed, ascending somewhat obliquely from the whole upper surface of each hypothallial cell, consisting of 6-13 cells in the center of the crust. Gametophytes monoecious; cystocarpic nemathecia 350-650 mm wide, 750-1250 mm long and 100-150 mm high; gonimoblasts developing from auxiliary cells; carposporangia formed 2-16 in 1-4 rows per gonimoblast; mature carposporangia 30-50 mm in diameter and 20-40 mm in length; spermatangial nemathecia 150-260 mm wide, 150-500 mm long and up to 50 mm high; spermatangia formed in a 8-12 paired catenate series, 2 mm in diameter and 2-4 mm in length when mature. Tetrasporangial nemathecia 350-900 mm wide, 500-750 mm long, and 80-110 mm high; single tetrasporangium usually terminal, sometimes lateral on the fertile perithallial filament, with or without a unicellular pedicel; mature tgetrasporangi 25-45 mm in diameter and 70-115 mm in length.
