The type species (holotype) of the genus Plocamium is Plocamium vulgare J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Plocamium leptophyllum Kützing.

[Georgetown, Tasmania]; (Kützing 1849: 885) Holotype: L; 941, 181...471 (Womersley 1994: 391) Notes: Womersley (1994: 391) notes that there are two isotype specimens in NSW. Van-Diemens-Land: J.D. Hooker No 1335 (Index Nominum Algarum).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), cartilaginous, flexible but firm and tough (Stearn 1973).
