Adjective (Latin), horny, hard and close-textured but not brittle (Stearn 1973).

According to Lee & Kim (1995: 164), the authority for this variety is Kützing 1849: 764.
Lee & Kim (1995: 164) note that Y.P Lee (1988) records G. corneum var. pinnatum Kützing from Korea but they consider this plant to be Pterocladia robusta. However, they note that the observation of cystocarps is needed to clarify the taxonomic position of the species.
This is a marine species.
