Type locality: Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia (De Clerck 2003: 180). Lectotype: LD 49606 (De Clerck 2003: 180). Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that lectotypification was established by Womersley (1967: 212). According to Womersley (1987), the type was collected by F. von Mueller.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), margined (Stearn 1973).

According to De Clerck (2003), Dictyota rugulosa has long been recognised as a synonym of Dilophus marginatus J. Agardh and becomes the correct name of this species when Dilophus and Dictyota are merged, because of the prior existence of Dictyota marginata (C. Agardh) Greville.
