Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Kapelodinium vestifici (Schütt) Boutrup, Moestrup & Daugbjerg.

Type locality: Barentssee; (Index Nominum Algarum)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), stretched out, extended (Stearn 1973).
