The type species (holotype) of the genus Lyngbya is Lyngbya confervoides C.Agardh ex Gomont.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lyngbya sordida Gomont.

Adjective (Latin), rose-coloured (Stearn 1973).
