The type species (lectotype) of the genus Microcoleus is Microcoleus vaginatus Gomont.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Blennothrix vermicularis Kützing ex Anagnostidis & Komárek.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), worm-shaped, almost cylindrical and bent in places, marked with irregular waves or bent lines (Stearn 1973).
