The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus quadratus (Hollenberg) Huisman

Type locality: South of Rawanawi Village, Marakei Atoll, Gilbert Islands (Hollenberg 1968: 74). Holotype: N.J.Cooper; July 1962; from below low water line on a reef. BISH D18774 (Hollenberg 1968: 74).
