The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Yoneshiguea compta (Børgesen) Barros-Barreto, Maggs & M.A.Jaramillo.

Adjective (Latin), adorned, ornamented, with a headdress (Neal 1993).
