The type species (holotype) of the genus Hantzschia is Hantzschia amphioxys (Ehrenberg) Grunow.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hantzschia compacta (Hustedt) Lange-Bertalot.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Greek), sharp on both sides (Griffith 2004).
