The type species (lectotype) of the genus Stauroneis is Stauroneis phoenicenteron (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Stauroneis terryi D.B.Ward ex T.C.Palmer.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), acute, pointed; i.e. narrowing gradually and making an angle of less than 90° (Stearn 1973).
