The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chamaepinnularia cymatopleura (West & G.S.West) Cavacini.

Type locality: Antarctica: Clear Lake, southern Victoria Land; (Index Nominum Algarum) Lectotype : BM; 34146 (Cavacini et al. 2006: 67) Notes: McMurdo Sound, Victoria Land (Antarctica) (Wetzel et al. 2013).
