The type species (holotype) of the genus Digenea is Digenea simplex (Wulfen) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Galaxaura rugosa (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), dichotomous, having divisions always in pairs (Stearn 1973).
