The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Protoperidinium exiguum (Cleve) Balech.

Adjective A (Latin), small, short, poor, scanty (Brown 1946).
