The type species (lectotype) of the genus Micrasterias is Micrasterias furcata C.Agardh ex Ralfs.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Micrasterias arcuata var. expansa (Bailey) Nordstedt.

Participle A (Latin), expanded, spread out (Stearn 1973).
