Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caloneis fontinalis (Grunow) A.Cleve.

Lectotype locality: Jardin botanique de Bruxelles, serre géraniums; (Van de Vijver & al. 2020: 2) Lectotype: 3.v.1877; BR; slide VII-19-C5, slide prepared from Delogne sample 137 (Van de Vijver & al. 2020: 2) Notes: Lectotype (designated by Van de Vijver & al. 2020: 2): "... slide VII-19-C5 (BR), slide prepared from Delogne sample 137, Jardin botanique de Bruxelles, serre géraniums (coll. date 3.v.1877), material present in the Van Heurck collection (BR). The lectotype specimen is here represented by Fig. 16."
