The type species (holotype) of the genus Anabaena is Anabaena oscillarioides Bory ex Bornet & Flahault .

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dolichospermum fuscum (H.Hill) Wacklin, L.Hoffmann & Komárek.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), a sombre brown, but often used to indicate darkness of colour (Stearn 1973).
