The type species (holotype) of the genus Melosira is Melosira nummuloides C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Aulacoseira gessneri (Hustedt) Simonsen.

Type locality: Rio Tapajoz. Brasilien- 5.12.56. Ge; (Hustedt 1965: 408) Holotype: BRM; A3/33 (old no. A233) (Simonsen 1987: 497) Notes: Tapajós river, north of Brazil [illustrations in Simonsen 1987, pl. 759, figs 9-12] (Tremarin et al. 2011: 193).
