The type species (holotype) of the genus Streblonema is Streblonema sphaericum (Derbès & Solier) Thuret.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Punctaria tenuissima (C.Agardh) Greville
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), spread out, indeterminate, straggling; literally ‘poured out’ (Stearn 1973).

Taxonomic notes
May be a stage in the life history of Desmotrichum undulatum (Jaasund, 1995; Pedersen, 1984) or in that of Punctaria tenuissima (Nielsen et al., 1995).
