The type species (holotype) of the genus Pinnularia is Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pinnularia biceps var. gibberula (Hustedt) Krammer.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), interrupted, not continued (Stearn 1973).
