The type species (lectotype) of the genus Haliptilon is Haliptilon cuvieri (J.V.Lamouroux) H.W.Johansen & P.C.Silva.

Type locality: Extreme south tip of Isla Guadalupe, Baja California, Mexico (Dawson 1953: 124). Holotype: Dawson; Dec. 18, 1949; Intertidal on outer reef. HAHF Dawson 8355, on sheet 54922, including vials 2193-2194 and slide 1453 (Dawson 1953: 124).
